Straight Answers About Stumps.
Everything Alabama homeowners ask before booking a grind.
Frequently Asked Questions
We typically grind stumps 4–8 inches below ground level, which is plenty for replanting grass, laying sod, or putting down mulch. If you need it deeper for a structural project, just let us know and we'll plan accordingly.
We back-fill the hole with the resulting wood chips and grindings, which works great as a natural mulch and settles over time. If you'd prefer the chips hauled away, we can arrange that during the estimate.
Yes — Just Stumps AL is fully licensed and insured. We carry liability coverage to protect your property and our crew, and we're happy to share documentation on request.
Absolutely. After Alabama storms we respond as quickly as possible to remove fallen small trees, cut up downed limbs, grind stumps and clear debris so your property is safe and accessible again.
Pricing depends on the size, number, and access to the stumps. Most single-stump jobs are very affordable, and we always provide a free, no-obligation estimate before any work begins. Senior citizen discounts available.
We're based in Rainbow City, AL and serve a 70-mile radius including Gadsden, Argo, Hayden, Trussville, Gardendale, Ashville, Steele, Springville, and Birmingham. We also serve parts of Georgia and Tennessee.
The main factors are the stump's diameter, how many stumps you have, the type of wood, how far roots spread above ground, and how easy it is to reach the stump. Stumps behind fences, on slopes, or close to houses and fences can take more care. Grinding several stumps on the same visit usually lowers the cost per stump.
We use a Vermeer SC852 stump grinder. It's compact enough to fit through most backyard gates, but strong enough for large hardwood stumps. Because it's lighter than big tracked machines, it causes much less damage to lawns and driveways.
Yes. If you have surface roots running out from the stump that are getting in the way of mowing or landscaping, we can grind those as well. Just point them out during the estimate so we can include them in your price.
Most average-sized stumps take between 15 minutes and an hour. Very large stumps or groups of stumps can take longer. We'll give you a realistic time frame when we give you your estimate.
You can, but it's usually best to plant a few feet away from the old stump. Remaining roots and wood chips break down over time and can take nutrients from the soil. If you want to replant in the exact spot, remove the chips and add fresh topsoil first.
No. As long as we can reach the stumps and you've shown us which ones to grind, you don't need to be there. Many customers are at work while we grind. We'll let you know when the job is finished.
Before grinding near possible utility lines, we make sure they're marked through Alabama 811. Please tell us about any private lines, like sprinkler systems, invisible dog fences, or outdoor lighting, so we can work around them.
We usually schedule within a few days, and sooner after storms whenever we can. Call Mike at 205-913-1426. Most estimates can be given the same day, either on site or from photos you send.
